This was the second of two Forum seminars related to the March/April 2000 thematic issue of Health Affairs which dealt with prescription drugs. This session featured the lead Health Affairs article, The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit: How Will the Game Be Played? which was presented by authors Haiden A. Huskamp, PhD, and Richard G. Frank, PhD. They were followed by Patricia M. Danzon, PhD, who responded to the Huskamp article with her Perspective piece, Pharmaceutical Benefit Management: An Alternative Approach. Lee N. Newcomer, MD, explained why he believes Congress should consider ensuring patient safety and reducing medication errors before expanding coverage of outpatient drugs for Medicare beneficiaries.
